Equipment Needed

The following list describes the essential starting equipment that someone who is new to the hobby of painting tabletop role playing/war gaming models should consider. These items are, generally, easily accessible.

Some items in the list can be costly, however, so it is recommended that these items are either bought as individual items as required (such as Hobby Acrylic Paints) or purchased when you have increased your skill and or confidence levels.

Brushes

  • Size 1 or 2 Round Brush

  • Size 00 or 000 Fine Detail Brush

  • Drybrush

  • Stiff bristled or old synthetic brush

  • Stippling Brush (short, rounded and firm bristles)

  • Sponges (coarse, fine, cosmetic, etc.)

Paints & Mediums

  • Hobby Acrylic Paints (Citadel, Vallejo, Army Painter, etc.)

  • Acrylic Inks

  • Alcohol Inks

  • Oil paint

  • Glaze Medium

  • Flow Improver

  • Acrylic Retarder

  • Artists Odorless Oil Thinner

  • Water

  • Primer (white, grey, black, etc.)

  • Varnish (matte, gloss)

Other

  • Wet Palette

  • Dry Palette

  • Paper Towel

  • Metal Teaspoon (reference)

  • Water Cup

  • Metal Oil Paint cup

  • Brush Cleaning Fluid

  • Brush Conditioner

  • Optional: Airbrush

Workspace

  • Daylight balanced lamp

  • Optional: Magnifier

  • Clear workspace

  • Hobby mat (e.g. PVC cutting mat)
